What happens after a Chemistry Session?
Updated: Jan 7, 2020
Well, I usually send a small questionnaire that I’ll ask you to fill before our 1st session. Questions are based around why you have chosen to work with a coach and what is working well and less well for you in your life.
If we have chosen to do a block of 3 or 6 sessions, we could structure them according to what you want to achieve in your work/life. Some clients are very keen in getting a very structured plan. Others like to play it by ear. However, we always have a list of things to work on and we go back to it at each session to check the progress made.
The sessions are usually spread out monthly, but depending on what we work on, we can start with weekly and then space them out in time.
How long is the session?
A coaching session with me usually last 1.5 hours. I also offer a breakthrough session of 2 hours, usually for clients looking to target a specific issue or preparing for a big change/project in their work or life.
At the end of the session, I will prepare an email summary detailing what we worked on and what your call for action was. I find that summarizing the main things that were discussed is of great value to the client as well as the coach. I will also send references of authors/books or sometimes podcasts of things that were relevant in the session.
Sometimes the work we do is creative, and I encourage taking a lot of pictures of what we worked on.
Will I get homework?
I do like to give homework, but you do not have to complete them, it is up to you. I encourage you to complete it because it does make a difference to your end result. I also find it useful as it does not interrupt the work we started in the coaching session.
How will our Coaching work be like?
At the beginning of the session, we define the topic of relevance you want to bring to the session. I often ask: ‘How do you want to feel at the end of the session?’. This is helpful as it gives me a very good idea of your state of mind.
You set the agenda and it can be as detailed as you would like it to be. It is pretty simple: Coaching works if you are ready to work on yourself and with a coach.
I believe a coach should also show some accountability, so I will be checking on the progress of the decisions you have decided to make at our session, either via email or at our next session. I am proactive with my clients and tend to send them articles to read too.
I honestly think that there is no rule to the amount of sessions one needs and the length between them. I find that it works well to do a minimum of 3 with some follow up sessions every 3-6 months. That is if we have worked on a plan together and need to pause the progress along the way.
Will coaching always bring result/change?
I believe in the power of coaching, so I say yes. However, there is no point in doing coaching if you don’t feel ready for it. The best way to find out if you are is by doing a chemistry session. Maybe even a few, with different coaches, can help you decide who is the best fit. I am a firm believer that self-awareness and doing work on oneself is the most important thing to do in one’s life. How can you grow if you do not spend time on understanding yourself better?
